Ethics and Social Responsibility

The course consists of 2 modules.

Module 1: Research Ethics, Integrity, and Data Privacy

Learning Objective: Cultivate a comprehensive understanding of ethical principles, guidelines in research, and data privacy, fostering responsible practices and accountability in research conduct.
Learning Outcomes:
  • Understand the principles of research ethics, integrity, and data privacy, encompassing responsible research practices, data management, authorship, and ethical review processes.
  • Adhere to relevant ethical guidelines, regulations, and data protection laws (like GDPR) in various research contexts while maintaining moral and legal obligations.
  • Recognise and address ethical dilemmas in research, including conflicts of interest, misconduct, and challenges related to data privacy and security.
  • Develop skills in navigating ethical challenges in interdisciplinary and cross-cultural research collaborations, promoting a culture of transparency, reproducibility, and openness in the research process.
  • Understand and apply the process for ethical approval of research projects, incorporating measures to protect participant data and confidentiality.

Module 2: Sustainability, Social Impact, and Data Security

Learning Objective: Comprehend the importance of sustainable development, social impact, and data security, and the role of researchers in these areas.
Learning Outcomes:
  • Understand the principles of sustainable development and their significance in research, innovation, and policymaking.
  • Evaluate the environmental, social, and economic implications of research projects and their potential contributions to sustainability goals and societal well-being.
  • Develop strategies to minimise negative consequences and maximise benefits for society, considering short-term and long-term impacts of research.
  • Understand and apply the principles of data security, including confidentiality, integrity, availability, and the ability to assess and mitigate data security risks.
  • Promote interdisciplinary approaches to address complex sustainability and data security challenges in research and collaborate with stakeholders to align research with societal needs.
